Did you encounter any problems on the surface?” The ahdar’s tone smiled, even if his facestretched far too tightly now-could not.

“No, sir.” Gallatin hesitated, then came forth with the truth. “But it wasn’t easy … being among them . .

“I’m sure,” Ru’afo replied promptly, dismissing Gallatin’s distress without an atom of empathy. It was Ru’afo who had masterminded the plan to extract revenge on the Baku; Ru’afo who had always been the one in favor of violence, of lawlessness. “Just don’t forget what they did to us. We’ll have them rounded up in a day or two … we needn’t bother with the Federation’s holoship anymore. Just get the holding cells ready.”

Gallatin acknowledged with a nod-at the same time, forcing himself to remember the day, long ago, when all of them had been given, in effect, a death sentence.
